Hey, I'm building myself an area with a lot of trains.

Just a few general Q's
1. Do trains cost much, will having 5+ in one area create lag?
(For example if I had a line of trains running constantly, would it tax the players/map?)
2. Can trains run along diagonal planes/surfaces?
(Can trains run up/downhill?)

Nonrelated: What do you guys think about having a area with multiple trains running in opposite directions underneath the payload's path? Dangerous enough for you?

(Well.... sort of related)....

Trains running back and forth underneath any point is going to be about as dangerous as the final point in Steel, or the point in Nucleus, or any variant you care to come up with- you fall and you die.

The biggest issue with it would be team balance, as usual. If we assume that you have a narrow path (relatively speaking) over these trains in order to make it dangerous, you have two potential issues. The first relates to Snipers- if there's little cover, they can kill people on the cart very easily, because dodging's limited. The second is related to Pyros- airblasting people in that situation is likely to knock them off the edge, particularly if the cart's hogging the center line.

Take that into consideration and it should work out fine.

Yeah I've taken both into account, my largest obstacle in my map is sniper lines. My rooms start as naturally very large, and once they're started I begin filling them with walls, buildings, and details that block line of sight.

My plan is to create a slight zig-zag course along the small path with walls in-between that block sniper line of sight, and then put holes to either side periodically leading down into the trains.

I think it'll be a really fun room, but it needs to be carefully balanced. :)
