Should VALVe have placed a working ladder entity for TF2? There's a reason VALVe didn't use ladders in their maps of TF2.

I think that removing ladders is similar to some games removing the 'crouch' feature. Even if you don't want to use it, it seems kind of silly to remove such a standard feature.

I know it'd be goofy to see people sliding up a ladder without using their arms and legs, but at least give mappers the option.

People for gods sake think how tf2 would look like with ladders.. it would NOT work.

It absolutely would not work. Plus, if they added a ladder function and then didn't use it in their official maps, it would be a really bad design choice to put them in your custom maps.

They'd just be bad for flow (forget about looks). You're completely open to attack while using a ladder They'd be awkward for medics and spies (spies would have a high risk of detection around a ladder and it'd be hard for a medic to do well healing someone climbing a ladder) and completely overpowered for engies (who would have an easy time racking up kills with an SG at the top of the ladder).

Theyre not really nessecary, so long as you can still do very quick elevators, I suppose.

I wish they left in ladders. I don't care if you look silly while climbing them. Saying an engineer could put a sentry at the top of a ladder and rack up the kills is not necessarily true. As it would more likely be just stairs. If it really would become a problem then the author could just put a "no build zone" around the top of the ladder.

Just say no! To ladders that is. Ladders look awefull in games when they don't make the user's arms and legs move which they wont in TF2.
Also the source implementation of ladders isn't fantastic and just wouldn't work.

The main reason why Valve removed ladders, is because on ladders your movement is constrained and there is no way to quickly dodge incomming gunfire ect.

They decided to replace ladders with ramps and stairs wich gives your more freedom of movement.

I thought about this the other day when I noticed there's a ladder in the props, but it would be too weird. It always looked odd in CS or HL:DM to see someone "running" up a ladder. However, I can respect someone else desire to want ladders in their level. Let the people decide if they like playing the map or not, I say.

Ladders are a crutch really, at least in multiplayer. 90% of the time a ladder is used, a redesign of the area to allow a ramp or stairway would result in a better flowing area with more interesting combat experiences.

Of course, there's the other 10% of the time where a ladder does make sense in terms of design, but it's not enough for me to consider their absence any great loss.
