09-21-09 update:

Hey guys, I also released the first version of the koth version. It comes with a slightly modified version of the arena but remains 95% the same.

Download KOTH | Download ARENA

The Download button leads to the arena version for the moment, I'm thinking about making a pack with the koth and arena together so download will be easier.

Hello everyone.

While I was working on cp_bleak, I also started to work on an arena level that soon began to grow larger and larger.

Malevolence is a small to medium sized level set in an industrial plant located on quiet alpine hills. It features medium to large zones and narrow paths providing an interesting gameplay.

Two doors located in the CP room open as soon as the point is available for capture, thus opening a new, frantic path to the point. Two vents also lead to the main room allowing snipers to get there quite quickly. Scouts, Soldiers and Demomen can also reach the highest level pretty fast.

The map contains four medium metal packs, one full metal pack, two small health kits and one medium health kit located on the log in the main room. The map also features some water spots preventing players from burning to their deaths.

After some playtestings I decided to release this public beta because the map played very well and I didn't receive any negative criticism. The central area is designed to receive large battles, and is of course a very dangerous place when a lot of players clash. The other paths are usually safer but longer, and are often death traps because spies usually take those paths.

I'm also thinking about a possible koth version, but I think the map is probably too small, and I'll have to close some paths.

Wow, this map looks nice! It's kind of a shame that it's Arena though, Arena maps are mostly overlooked by the majority of the community - maybe you should see how it plays as a KoTH map, then it might get the attention it deserves! :D

Have you tested this? It looks great but an alpha 2 to beta 1 is a big jump, even tested. Anyways, I like the new indoors industrial theme. Could I suggest this be implemented for the final cap of a 5cp map?

I agree that arena doesn't get the attention it deserves, but I have come to love it, so if you are testing give me a shout.

EDIT: A better more TF2 name would also be great. I just think that a map name should fit the character, and to be honest, that map doesn't seem malevolent.

Thanks for the replies. :)

Yeah I tested it of course, and since nothing major (flaws, bugs etc) appeared during the playtests I decided to release this beta. Everything that needed to be updated/improved/modified is done in this version (shadows, little bugs etc).

I am also making a koth version, just testing things. I compiled the koth version about an hour ago and I'll probably test it someday with some friends to see how it plays, but I think I'll have to close paths and perhaps create new ones.

I don't really get the 5cp map thing, are you talking about the industrial theme I developed for this map? If yes, of course you can, I just used stock assets. :D
And about the name, well, I'd prefer this name to be the final one, because I don't really like to change my mapnames (only when they're already taken, of course), it's pretty confusing when you have the same map with 5 different names. :D

When I first saw the title of this map I thought it was called "male violence" and I was like "...Eh?"

Still don't understand what "the quality, state, or feeling of being malevolent; ill will; malice; hatred." has to do with the map itself, but whatever. It still looks really nice, if not a bit visually cluttered.

Hehehe :D
Well I made a list of new names, and ultimately I will pick one. (some are Divergence, Haste, Ironic and Summerchill)

I also released the koth version. I really don't know how it will play, as arena and koth are in fact really different. I'm updating first post with the new link for the koth version.

Thanks for your comment! :)

I hope the adjustments were significant in the transition to Koth mode. This isn't an insult to you, I'm just getting tired of everytime someone posts a nice looking Arena map people go
"OMG MAKE IT KOTH I HATE WAITING IN ARENA"

:)

No more comments?

I won't be able to tweak the koth version if I don't receive feedback, and I'm sure some things can be changed in the current version. :D
For the moment the next step is to spice up lighting a little bit, remove this gray feel indoors.
