Qonk
by Furex

Qonk is a small, fast and deadly King of the Hill (or bunker) map. Every now and then the entire outdoor
part of the map is bombed, killing everyone there instantly. The bunker acts like a safe haven for those
who manage to get inside. If you hear the alarm, start running towards the bunker or prepare to get blown up!

Objective:
Capture the Control Point and defend it until your team's timer runs out.

Other Notes:
The Control Point cannot be captured while locked.

If the enemy team captures the Control Point, your team's timer will pause until you recapture the point.

INSTALLATION:
Unpack the contents of the .rar into your tf directory. Keeping the folder system intact will allow you to
see the thumbnail in the Map List.

FILES:
koth_qonk_a10.bsp - The map itself
koth_qonk_a10.res - Map list thumbnail link
menu_thumb_koth_qonk_a10.vtf - Map list image
menu_thumb_koth_qonk_a10.vmt - Map list thumbnail
readme_koth_qonk_a10.txt - This file

Sounds like a good idea. Looks like it may be a bit too much deathmatchey. If BLU and RED spawn in the buildings meters away from the cp.

The map itself looks brilliant though, nice detialing, would lilke to see this play well though as it looks and sounds great.

A satilite dish under ground doesn't make much sense. Nor does this "bombing" that kills the players, in this underground cave.

Plus, it would look a whole lot nicer with a 3dskybox anyway. So i'd recommend dispensing with the cave for a little sunlight.

Not a lot does make sense in the world of TF2 though...

If u take a walk in the map u see the ENTIRE roof opens up, allowing transmitions to the satellite and for sweet, sweet bombs to fly inside =)

Edit: as a matter of fact, i just saw its possible to see part of the roof on the last screenshot!

What's up with the name? Did you just go for the "first map to start with Q!" or?
If you have a reason for the name I guess it's okay... but It really makes no sense to me.

The bombing thing reminds me of that HL2DM map where you could lock the building down and outside would get bombed.
Could be fun if done properly, it is Koth right?

Yeah thats the map that inspired me, I loved that map! It was sweet standing safe inside the bunker waiting for the bombs to come, killing everyone who didnt make it inside =)
And yeah, its Koth!

Add some goal string, describing why and when bunker doors are closing.
And real explosion or something to visualize player's death.
And shadows.

Alpha 8 released!

Changelog:
- a new way to get out in the battlefield even after the doors are locked
- explosions so no more dying from nothing
- a gametext saying when the bunker is starting to close
- and a few more minor things

Not a lot does make sense in the world of TF2 though...

Only in custom made official maps where author's have "missed the plot" to a lack of better words.

Most objects in TF2, despite being warped in style and design, serve a/their purpose or function. Other than the fact you find bases built right opposite each other, most things actually do make sense. You still need to base your map off of reality otherwise immersion is.. not a result (and any game designers aim).

This is why Egypt, Fastlane and Watchtower make no sense. Egypt needs spytech to fully sync with the TF2 world; Fastlane needs a theme as currently it is a mish mash of TF2 style buildings of no purpose or functionality; and who builds a watch tower in a sinkhole? Payload is somewhat of a unique case as it is a game mechanic that is "strange", and said game mechanic which is the objective, and rendered acceptable, as is the intel ctf mode.

Why do you think satillite dishes are built on top of buildings, mountains, or in deserts. The chances of a satillite (or even more so, a specific satillite) orbiting directly over head to recieve a signal, is miniscule. They need an open sky to send and recieve signals.

Despite the cartoonish design of the game, this is still planet earth, and still our universe, and subsequently governed by known universal laws of physics. Even if it is 1967.

This map is awesome, keep it up!

However, I notice that on the bunker's corner (to RED's left) has the slightest open seam on the slope.

Nice to hear! :D and thanks for finding the glitch!

The entire roof of the cave slides away every now and then, allowing the bombs to slaughter everyone locked out, and, the satellite dish to send signals. Look at the last screenshot for a small look at it :D Thanks for the feeback!

Sorry Grazr, but from the moment there was a laser cannon on top of a frail wooden tower -gravelpit - (you've yet to find the power transmission or anything explaining this widget) to a rocket installed in such a location as dustbowl, the suspension of disbelief asked of TF2 players has been somewhat quite huge. :p

But of course a coherent, storytelling map is better than the opposite. ;)

Does that look so frail to you? P.S. The power cable is right there infront of you.

http://tf2wiki.net/wiki/File:Dustbowl_s3c2.jpg

Despite the mining theme, the finale is set on a rocket launch pad with relavent props. I don't see what's missing for you, beyond a sign designating "Nasa". If you're asking for that much realism.. to be quite honest where else would you have a rocket launch site than a dustbowl? Certianly not next to any populated city of any kind.

By all means, ask me to find justification for any more official maps that don't make sense to you. I'm pretty sure Valve know what they're doing, being professional, paid game designers.

Yes, it's "frail" for some doomsday supporting structure. I expect this to be situated on a big metallic support or a concrete roof. And where would this cable pursue its route ? Anyway, the point is you can find some unexpected piece of technology scattered in rusty/woody setting in TF2. And its fine... Therefore I don't undersant the outcry about some dish being into a bunker that can opens... does it target a geostationnary satellite ? Is it a satellite dish at all ?

Let us give Furex time to detail and add "mandatory" elements to deepen the sens of reality in his map.
