I saw this a little while back, very interesting. It looks more like valve giving away items though (like the soldier's medals) than trading items.

Or there's no trading in the literal sense. You give x an item and presumably x gives you an item. At the players discretion.

But, heh. It doesn't sound so safe for trading with people you don't know. If my presumption is correct.

if it is trade between players, im sure the system will incorporate some kind of escrow deal

if it's give away item and you get another wouldn't peeps continously do it until they get hat
and also i think its just valve testing the item screen when you get an item

Those cvars have been in the game since the Sniper/Spy update. Funny how people are just finding them now.

Yeah this is what I thought too...

Anyway I hope they are working on a much better system such drpepper's suggestion of an escrow situation.

What you get when you use the cvars seem to be a base or just maybe the graphical UI. I don't doubt that the actual trading system will be completely different when/if it comes out.

Old news, unfortunately.

The good news is that this is a mostly-solved problem with other online games. Typically both sides select a series of items for a swap, and both must "lock in" their items before it's possible for either side to signify acceptance. Some games even tally up a rough estimate of value in order to warn one side that they may be getting a bad deal.

With TF2 there'll need to be something to make sure that someone can't sneakily swap the super duper rocket launcher with a normal one of the same icon at the last second before locking in.

Given their track record with systems, my guess is that won't happen (until several months later when it becomes a big problem)
However luckily, it's one icon per item, barring the Valve weapons, so that shouldn't be an issue.

But hey, at least the trading system is happening and possibly in the forseeable future at that
