Ok, so I downloaded a texture (Lava!).
Problem is, I can't figure out where to put it.
So yeah, where do I put a downloaded texture so that I can use it in Hammer?

C:\Program FIles\Steam\Steamapps\<Your Steam Username>\Team fortress 2\tf\materials\
Create the materials folder if it doesn't exist

Oh! This is bad!
I tried putting the folder that contained the files into the textures folder, and that didn't work,
so I put the VMT and VFT files directly into the textures folder, and that didn't work either.
What am I doing wrong?

ok, the lava texture and the jungle pack generally come in a folder or contain a readme. It tells you what folder you ahve to extract it to. This is important due to the .vmt settings.

You need to extract to a folder specified in the .vmt under:

C:\Program FIles\Steam\Steamapps\<Your Steam Username>\Team fortress 2\tf\materials\<vmt folder specification>\

It'll be under the... $baseTexture operand.

The jungle pack, I'm certain it contains a readme to installation, as it contains models.

The Jungle pack is fine, I just put it in the TF Folder like I would with a skin.
And you totally lost me while explaining how to get Lava to work.
I downloaded the file and unzipped it to my Desktop, I have a VMT and a VFT. They both came inside a folder called "scrollinglava".
I didn't get a Read-me or anything.
I am so confused right now, it is unbelievable.

EDIT: I found the texture in Hammer Editor, I was trying to find it under the "TF" Filter.
I can use it now, but it is nothing but the Pink and Black Checkerboard...
I guess I have to find another Lava Texture :(

Restart Hammer.

If that doesn't work, open up the VMT file in notepad, then refer to what Magical Potato said.

That's what I did.
I compiled the map and it stays as a checkerboard, but the sound that it is supposed to make still plays when I walk on it.
Doesn't matter anymore, I have someone else working on the textures.
