We're really happy to announce the Swamp Theme as the first public release of an entirely new custom theme for Team Fortress 2 mappers. We've created more than 54 assets to offer a wide variety of new content to be used. And while that is a lot of content, it's not enough! People have been giving us some great suggestions, and we're listening. We're going to create a Swamp Theme expansion, and YOU get to choose what will be in it. So if there's anything missing, anything you want, you can have it!

REQUESTS

Models
  • Proper collisions on swamp trees
  • Skybox cards
  • Swamp rock reskins
  • Wider variety of trees
  • Thick hull rowboat (to keep water from clipping inside)
  • Trees with a bigger base
  • Airboat model
  • Owl dummy
  • Rotting tree/stump/log/boat props
  • Lantern with hook/without existing base
  • Fishing Pole
  • Rusty swampy pipes

Materials
  • Murky, brown water/mud
  • Shore overlay
  • Blend swampgrass/swampdirt/swampmud to swampcrete (ala hydro)
  • Metal walls with rust/swamp grime at the bottom (like alpine has the grass/lichens at the bottom of wood walls)
  • Water stains
  • Rotting wood texture (with algae)
  • Rock to moss blend texture
  • Swamp mud tire track overlay - Sawmill one works fine
  • Darker lily pads

Other
  • Pondweed/Underwater detail sprites
  • dx80 Water
  • Firefly particle
  • Toad/Bug sounds
  • Rainy soundscapes

FINISHED
  • Netting material for use on displacements
  • Moss overlay
  • Wooden architectural support beams
  • Dark green shrubbery reskins
  • Wooden door
  • Rope Pile
  • Root models
  • More Algae
  • Buoy/Water Drip Prefabs - particle effect start enabled
  • Bigger Jetty
  • Bigger reeds
  • Vines as rope material

I think there should be more variety in the trees. In fact, I mentioned to zpqrei that I had some ideas for swamp trees prior to this pack. I can go ahead and make some models for you guys if you want.

edit: also a modification of the boat model would be nice. You can make a version with the hull a lot thicker so that it can be floating in water without water clipping into the inside of the boat.

Agreed on all of those points. I'll tell you if I think of something else.

Oh I thought of something else. You know how the bottoms of the swamp trees have that really nice green vine-ish stuff? I dont know what they're called. But anyways when you line up the bottoms of the trees along the shore it looks great, except that you have a thousand tree trunks in the air that looks really cluttered.

So what I'm saying is making a tree model (or two) that has one trunk, but a 3x wide base spreading out. Um... if you don't understand what I mean let me know.

edit: and I thought of another! Root models! so you can have roots sticking out of walls, or roots sticking out of the water like in this pic:

edit edit: and a larger version of the grass/reeds model would be useful as well. taller as well as wider.

Heh, spud you're on a roll here. Models and all that is way out of my league, but I'll get going on some more water overlays and other grimy stuff.

Keep the suggestions coming!

Some rotting wood textures covered with algae would be absolutely awesome. :D

I haven't had access to Hammer since this release, but tell me; do the boats sway in the water? I think they should.

Also, total mud. Not even water, but still classed as water, so you sink in it.

Oh, and an owl dummy. The kind used to scare off birds.

1. Detail pondweed on some of the blend textures intended for underwater use. Like the current grasses, but for underwater use with more swaying. (I'm planning to try something like that as a self-teaching project soon.)

2. Is there any way to add swamp-gas bubbles? For example, some combination of env_bubbles and env_splash, but use with sprites so that you see the bubbles coming up (from the muck below) and rising to the surface and holding for a moment before popping?

Also, total mud. Not even water, but still classed as water, so you sink in it.

For shallow mud, perhaps you could use two sandwiched trigger_gravity entities to emulate a thicker liquid by lowering gravity in the lower layer and raising it up above, so it's hard to jump out of but you also sink slowly.

Owl Dummy would be a good one.

Make the vines ropes instead of materials for displacements. This way you can just use the rope tool. And it's visible on both sides. ;)

Make dx80 water for the Swamp water and Skybox water. Easier to use in different maps that arent' in teh contest.

A few off the top of my head (excuse duplicates):
  • Some decayed, rotten wooden textures. Perhaps some variants of the wooden walkway from sawmill would be nice.
  • Rotting tree stump/log props.
  • Some more ambiguous architectural props, such as rotting wooden support beams/trusses for our shanty towns.
  • A blend texture or two that transitions to rocky moss-covered ground. Not an uncommon sight in swamps.
  • Muck muck muck muck muck!

just from the top of my head:

A broken version of the boat
A broken version of the bridge
Moar trees (would also be nice with some smaller plants like bushes)
Very dirty wood texture (for pillars, beams, houses etc)
A godzilla sized gator :D
