I don't understand why people yell at those that edit the valve maps, especially when the edit involves changing a well known map to provide alternate game styles.

Please provide some screen shots mate. I want to see what you changed.

in before lock/flamewar.

it isnt policy to lock these threads as long as they stay civil.
editing valve maps may be frowned upon by the general users, but anyone is welcome to post their modified official maps here.

I think it really depends on the person. Valve already stated that the reason they released the vmf of a few of their map's so beginners could ride the learning curve more easily and for advanced users to use as a reference. If your a beginner I think its absolutely fine to edit Valve maps since that why we have them, however because of this you can expect people to turn around and ignore it because the originality of making your own map isnt there. That isn't to say people wont play it or anything but, you should take what you can learn from it and apply it into your own work when your ready and not edit Valve maps forever.

Because it is considered lazy and unimaginative.

TF2, despite now having been updated with several maps, community maps and new map modes, is still better off with unique and fresh interesting maps. Not rehashed versions of the same official maps. The idea is to provide more variety to the game, and editing a game mode in an already released map can only forfill that need to a limited degree. Playing any particular map all the time, despite the game mode, will get boring, and nullify the maps enjoyability.

On a side note, users here spend months building, testing and perfecting their own original creations, so the mere mention of releasing someone elses work with a few flicks of the wrist to edit the mode, is an insult to all their hard work.

Generally you find those who edit an official map are the ones who like the idea of mapping but don't really feel like researching into how it all works (and subsequently never release any "real" map of their own). So the dedicated members have no motivation to make time for these people. The act of intruding upon these idea's is only to try and motivate them to do otherwise, as they are doing; producing original content that will refresh the gamers experience of TF2 to the maximum amount. This community is considered a place to learn and teach by the more active and dedicated members so the very notion of merely rereleasing other peoples work does not pass well, and is believed it should be kept to places such as FPSB, where publicity and file sharing is the name of the game. Rather than education and quality control.

Jesus I'll just take it down then. Look, all I wanted was the ability to play a new gamemode on my favorite map. This was just a break from working on my own map, as well as just kind of fun. I knew people didn't like this, but I had no idea it made me such a horrible person. I'll never EVER do anything like this ever again. I promise.

I was merely indulging Cpt. Axle's curiosity.

Far be it for me to stop what you're doing if it's what you want to do. There's no law against it, and as drpepper said, the thread wont get locked or your file removed.

And yes. If i give you 3 paragraphs of text regardless of relavence, it means i will be right and you are wrong. God forbid if i ever got administrative powers, you might all be banned for merely posting at all!

I don't mind Valve map edits because the best will rise to the top anyway.

And the best probably won't be edits.

If it is though, I'll be the first to spark the angry mob.

I can't stand edited Valve maps but not for the reason most have.

Mine reason is...... there hardly is any effort at all.

Your intel room

I didn't make the map but it feels like a direct slap to the face.

You took what is by far IMO the best looking map and added a 3 brush room *one for the floor, wall and ceiling* to add insult its not even the same theme!

I highly doubt you made it FOR ctf, just merely made IT ctf.

If you want to make it FOR CTF, add another building with alt routes, look at layout and balance issues.

Lack of effort is by far the reason of hate from me, adding to a valve map? for shame shouldn't do it but whatever, but do it justice and take more then 20 minutes *not counting compile..* to do so.

That's because Sawmill trees don't have a DX8 mode. If you want trees that bad, switch to DX9! :p

On the other hand, if you can do this well, it will be good, but you have a lot to live up to, Sawmill is a really good map.
