VALVE... even GODS mess up SOMETIMES.

Found something that just isn't right to see in a Valve map? An odd texture, brush overlap, whatever it is, you'll always find something that isn't quite what you'd expect to see.

Post your finds here.

A few minutes ago, I found this part of the BLU Spawn door for Gravelpit: it doesn't connect to anything, and thus, you can see the non-textured top of the winch:

And, a week or so ago, me and Zpqrei found this: a possible Model texture in Dustbowl?

Above the left entrance to Well 2nd CP, there's a detail trim that isn't long enough, on the point-side of the lobby.

Obviously, the hl2 skybox in arena_well.

On Gold Rush's 2nd stage, at the attacker's right gate, if you look down there's a flickering texture.

There's a few goofs on badwater too...

I remember seeing a shot of a floating light in the long tunnel.

Valve does that all the time with those doors.

Behind B on g pit there's a gap in the displacement along the fence. Er between two displacements.

Near the first forward spawn on Granary, the support beams holding up a slanted roof go through another beam, causing flickering textures.

Valve does quite a few flickering / overlaying textures.

Valve used to make lots of mistakes in their earlier maps (Half-Life, TFC, etc.) that I never really noticed until I became a mapper. Things like doors without a lip (causing that texture clipping bug), walls with stretched textures, etc. Of course, since it was their first time working with an engine (and it wasn't really theirs to boot aside from coding changes), it kind of made sense.

They don't mess up as much anymore now that they've become more skilled with their technology, but when they do, it's an interesting find. :)

HL2: in one of the underground carparks near where you need to go up that building to the 'horse' if anyone remembers, there is a displacement sticking through the wall from the other side.
TF2: Granary: second point, cant remember which side, the railing above the point is overlapping with something and causes the horizontal poles to flicker.
Dustbowl: first stage, second point: The top tunnels, where the first exit is on the left are 2 barrels. Behind them is a gap between 2 displacements.

Did you record straight to Avi? How did you convert from dem to avi, if not.

I heard that you play the .dem and record a movie whilst it plays but i'm not sure because, well i havn't tried it yet.

startmovie moviename avi

you get a little window that pops up asking for a codec, then after you exit the console it starts recording

Yes, I recorded straight to Avi with Fraps.

Usually, I record a demo, then I play it back while recording with Fraps.

This one was short, so I just recorded right off the bat.

Most major games are like this. They can't alot time to nitpicking every map to death.

And as someone said earlier, usually you have to be a mapper to notice. Most players just play and don't notice/care/

Custom maps alot of times are cleaner because the mapper isn't on a deadline. They are probably the only one doing anything to the map so they nknow it in and out.

At Valve they have several people working on a map so it's alot easier to miss something I'm sure.
