So I'm having a problem with area portals on powerhouse. When I downloaded the decompliled file from https://tf2maps.net/threads/valve-maps-decompiled.5952/ , with the area portals in most doorways. They were creating leaks in each doorway, confused why I asked a couple people, tried removing the area portals, nothing worked. So know my unexperienced self is asking for help and advice. :)

Decompiling maps can often break things in them. Have you tried completely remaking the areaportals properly?

Decompiling maps cause area portals to be 1 unit thick and slightly offset from the opening they once were at. You need to go to each area portal (with all details hidden) and stretch it to fit the opening it's next to. At least thats how I do it. You can recreate all of them, but why would you?

So they have to be bigger than a HU? Please explain.
You should make the area portal the size of the opening it's made on (most of the time the area portals are used on doors and windows). Area portals leak if the area they're enclosing has a gap without an area portal so a line can be drawn from one face of the portal to the other without obstruction. This is an area portal leak. Now I don't have much experience on the subject thogh I know the basic principle of its function. Like @Nixon said the decompilers tend to recreate area portals poorly forcing them to be remade or just removed. If you're only testing stuff on powerhouse, I suggest you remove any area portal to get rid of the error as area portals are only used for optimization.

tl;dr areaportals break if they dont seal an area completely, imo they're unnecessary for whatever you need to do with the mapfile so just remove them

Everytime I remove the area portals, it crashes when i try to load the map. My question was though, do I have to make it as THICK as the doorway? I know it has to cover the whole doorway.

That might mean either you've messed up the areaportals or the space isn't sealed. Turn off all visgroups aside from the world geometry one perhaps, to make your time easier. Then, just look around, and make sure there aren't any gaps at all

Make sure to turn off displacements and tool brushes as well, as they're under the world geo vis group but don't seal things
