So, i want to host a TF2 server and i have the hardware and the internet to do it
The server
AMD A4
6GB DDR3
1TB HDD
And my speed is
100/MB down
6/MB up

But i don't want a jerk do pay 5 bucks to ruin all my equipment
Then the obvious option would be a VPN
but this can cause a lot of lag
but is it worth it to have a layer of protection?

That upload speed is awfully low. You can run only 1 instance of SRCDS with that connection.

Otherwise, like @iiboharz said, go right ahead and run one; the chances of someone attacking your server is very small. You also need a HTTP (FastDL) server if you want to host custom maps. You can run maps on the steam workshop if you don't want to run a FastDL server.

The VPN would give you faster connection speeds and might come with a HTTP server (depends on the host) at the cost of some CPU power. It depends if your CPU is faster than the CPU running the virtual machine is on a VPS.

For more questions related to server hosting (and any technical problems you run into), this is the community that you want to go to: https://forums.alliedmods.net/ (the creators of Sourcemod own that website)

Do you have any grudges against anybody? Any enemies, opponents, haters, that might increase your chances of a DDOS?

Are you running a server for map testing? Or just a general thing you wanna start up?

Unless you have something specific in mind, you won't have an issue. I'm a "known" member of the community with my own server and I publicly advertise events on it and have never had an issue with ddos-ing. Same with tf2maps, we've held a ton of big events and as far as I'm aware we've never had an issue either.

I wouldn't put too much concern into it.
