How to make walls you can heal through?

I'm trying to make a wall/floor medics can heal through, like the grate on 2fort. There are area portals surrounding the grates on 2fort, but I'm not sure what area portals do or how they work.

Can someone tell me how to do this?

Areaportals are just for optimisation, and have no effect on anything other than what your computer renders. It's more than likely that it's just the material type let's through the healing beam (like it also lets through explosive damage).
