We should have an Office / extra technology pack.

I was looking at old computer adverts for IBM, Apple, Commodore, and I was thinking that somebody should make a asset pack that extends onto the spytech theme, and goes into things like offices, computers, typewriters, desks, cabinets, and appropriate textures.

A list of viable assets to be made for something like this:

- Personal Computers (I know tf2 takes place in the 60s but they had terminals that connected to mainframe computers), like very old PC's, like Apple II's or something along the lines of that

- Typewriters

- Office Desks, for some reason they don't seem to have stuff like this in default tf2. Things like single office desks that can hold a PC / typewriter

- Appliances like stoves, wooden tables, telephones, tape recorders

- Prop physical media (Floppy disks, cassetes, punch cards, Tape Reels).

-Office Cubicle walls

- TV monitors / Monitors.

- More large computer assets (Spytech computers)

-Floor textures (Office Carpet, Hardwood Floors, Plaster Wall)

- Background music (midi renditions of pop songs from that time, muzak)

We could definitely use some more TVs, monitors, or maybe even projector screens. It would certainly spice up the spytech scenes (giant red countdown clock on the wall, anyone?)

We really shouldn't, the effect of all you listed can be achieved with existing spytech models and textures. The additions you suggest shouldn't be something that are planned without a map, I suggest making a map with the theme in mind, then making extra on the way instead because the theme doesn't seem standalone enough to be a pack or theme

I agree with fanta and I'll add that tf2 is focused around industrial settings. I feel like the office setting would take away from tf2 more than it adds to it.
Don't industrial settings include offices? Like Black Mesa? Despite having multiple industrial complexes in the proximity, it still sports many office complexes.

What I was pointing to was Industrial Offices, like Warehouses. TF2 maps still have offices, but they're in an industrial setting. Like, it's not the two themes are completely opposite to each other. Industrial factories can have offices belonging to managers, so can warehouses, hell many of the maps that red and blu fight over have many office - like settings. My Idea was to simply add more to the spytech.

Adding to Fanta and Fubar..

I think "offices" mostly apply to out of bounds detail spaces, and there are quite a bit of unused assets lying hidden in the depths of the downloads section that might fit your bill. Most of the things described seem like detail/clutter that isn't necessarily modular or usable in lots of situations. Things like cubicles would also be terrible to traverse as a gameplay space. I think community efforts are better spent on resources that are applicable to many situations, like with frontline, where the most useful stuff isn't really the "military" assets, but the many variations in textures, skyboxes, and foilage (imo).

I'd like to see some new spytech assets, but you really can't make many modular pieces that haven't already been done. If anything you'd be designing a giant landmark spytech prop to make your map standout i.e. nucleus.

A punch-card overlay you can slap a bunch of onto a desktop or floor would be nice and very easy to make. So would an old-timey adding machine (I think the '50s offices in Portal 2 had them). And I've been saying for years that an oscillating fan similar to this would be a nice thing to have. Paging @boomsta ...

There are some props in the SFM leak that would go well in a pack like this too, if and when we can get somebody to make proper LODs for them. Potted plants, filing cabinets, that cigarette vending machine from Meet the Spy...

Funny you should mention that... the small printer device on the right already exists in-game. I believe it's one of the props named "powerhouse_console".

I had to do a research paper on the Apollo 11 computers, and that's called a peripheral device, which was an add on for the IBM System / 360 Machines back in the 60s.

I would love to do stuff like that but I don't have much of a life since starting my job. Sorry! Maybe if I ever find time I can squeeze out some, it sounds fun.

I could probably take some sketch photos and send them here

And I'm okay at modeling and since it's appliances they're more easier to do imo
