How do I make proper, good-looking tunnels?

Maybe this: https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Displacement#Subdividing_displacements would be helpful? Basically, they make a tunnel out of equally-sized cubes, then make the inward-facing surfaces displacements, and smooth them out.

Remember that for subdivide to work you need the displacements to be the same power. Anyway, here's another tutorial I've found
