How do you make displacements fit together?

Hi, can I have some help getting displacements to mesh? Is there a better method than trial and error? If so, please post it below. Anything helps. Thanks!

If the brushes they were made from shared an edge, you can just select those displacements, bring up the texture edit window, go to the displacements tab, and hit "sew" and they'll join edges again.

Sewing doesn't work if the displacements don't have the same dimensions and powers, though.
EDIT: This is wrong

As far as I know, the best way to make them line up is to make your surface out of a big grid of displacements, all of them with the same dimensions (like covering your floor in a grid of 512*512 displacements). That way they sew nicely.

Alternatively, you could use the "Raise To" option on the Paint Geometry tool to get them to a specific set height. This comes in handy when aligning displacements to a floor (just "raise" them to zero).

But yeah, I don't really have a good way to do it. Grids are pretty annoying to work with.

Nope. All that matters is that the adjacent corners of one either line up with the adjacent corners of another or line up with one corner and the midpoint of another. (Quarter points don't seem to work.) So for example you could have one big displacement attached to two that are half the size and they would sew.

Huh, weird. Thanks for letting me know.

But note that when they are raised they will not realy sew. Only with the same elevation they will sew. That part is still important enough. But its best to never use that method (at least, i cant think of a moment where this must happen) to raise a displacement and instead just move/scale the brush itself. This allows the sewing to be preserved by adding a connecting displacement between the 2 to fix the diffirence of elevation. Or vertex edit the brush.

I've had a similar problem where they sew fine but there are dark lines in between some of the displacements

That's usually caused by either Fast lighting settings or making entire adjacent brushes into displacements as opposed to only the visible edge(s)

is it probably because i make them different sizes too?

Probably not, but that does mean they won't sew. See Pocket's post:
