So I have been trying to find the names of some particles by opening the .pcf file in the particle editor. However as soon as I click 'open', the whole thing crashes.

At first I thought it might have been because I had Hammer still open so I closed it, which didn't change the outcome. I tried restarting Steam which did nothing. I also made sure I had no other options in my launch options (I usually have -novid -noborder in there) so the only option was -tools

Nothing worked. Anyone got any suggestions what's going wrong here?

What particles are you trying to open and are they from a different game?

Works for me.
Are you running anything at the same time that could somehow interfere with this?

You know, you could always copy the particles into the SFM and open them there. But yeah, TF2 isn't supposed to crash.

Well I got further with SFM. I could navigate though folders to select which file to open and I got as far as common\Team Fortress 2\tf\, but as soon as I clicked on the 'particles' folder SFM crashed as well.

And that is caused by all the particle files or just this one? Might be a corrupt particle file you got here.

Here's an idea:
Go to your desktop and see if it crashes.
If not, then start copying particle files there until it crashes again.
If it's really a corrupt particle file you'll know what causes it.

You mean move the particle files to the desktop, or at least some other location?
