Overlays not showing in hammer, until reload

There's been a lot of threads based around overlay issues, but I think I've got a new one, or at least I couldn't find anything too similar.

I can place my overlays correctly, and they will compile fine, but I can't see them in hammer. It fixes if I reload my map in hammer, but this is extremely annoying because I'm picky and I might want to change the overlay or put it somewhere else, and then it will be gone again and I can no longer see if I like it. It's not that big of a deal but it's kind of screwing with my workflow, so any input would be appreciated.

Do you mean like if you edit the texture, it doesn't change in hammer until reload? In that case, open you texture browser, and at the bottom click the button that says "reload" (or some similar name).

Not really sorry, I mean, the overlay disappears. Like on my old PC I could edit them on the fly, now I have to save and load the map for every change, otherwise they just don't appear. On that note, reloading textures didn't solve it. :( thank you though

Are you in 3D shaded mode or 3D flat? Shaded mode has been giving people all sorts of headaches including buggy/disappearing overlays. You can change your 3D view by clicking on that black little box in the top left corner that says "Camera" in the 3D viewport.

I've used both flat and shaded, neither of them really respond any differently - shaded just causes black flickering for me. But yeah, using flat for the most part.

Did you have any luck with validating TF2's game cache? Go to Steam->right-click Team Fortress 2 in the game library on the left-> Properties->Local Files->Verify integrity of game cache. If TF2 updates when Hammer's open you can get corrupted/missing files pretty quickly.

Thank you, but my tf2 seems to be validated and no change.

I've just noticed something, on the properties of my unshowing overlays, some of the properties look decidedly odd.
The Overlay Basis U, V and Normal, are all showing 9999 or minus 9999 on all. I think this might be the root of the problem. Anyone have ideas?

Check the brush face number, click pick and see if the face that the overlay is on is selected. That may be the problem, idk.

Would just like to say I'm still having this issue post reinstall :(

Wondering if anyone else is having this problem yet :p

In my experience, this happens anytime you switch the overlay's assigned brush face. All you have to do to get it to show up again is nudge the overlay in whatever direction you want. Just seems to reset it.
This 100%. Move it a little and it should appear again.

unfortunately doesn't fix it for me - this is happening on first placement, it does not show up doing this

Sorry for the double post. I've made a cheeky album showing what the problem is

I'm genuinely having a meltdown at this point, I just want to make my walls less bland with a few overlays to break it up, I have been away from mapping for like a year but I don't remember it ever being this hard. I remember just choosing the overlay and the brush face and it would just show up immediately.

Someone please tell me I'm doing something really horrendously stupid before I start tearing my hair out. - I cannot place overlays at all at this point and it's preventing muh progress.

Have you tried selecting the overlay texture prior to placing the overlay? I doubt that's it but i'd say its a bit quicker anyways.

just tried, no dice

thank you for trying though <3

interestingly, I can copy and paste which will create an additional working overlay, however, I can only do that if I'm pasting it onto the same brushface. Otherwise it won't come up, regardless of moving and jiggling. Until I reload hammer, at which point it appears to just be 50/50. I can't figure it out at all, I've been through a reinstall of tf2 and a verify. And googling the problem it seems it's only me having the problem. I'm really stumped.

if you copy an overlay onto a different brush face you need to change it's assigned face in the overlay's properties.

Yeah, I know- I guess that does come under something astoundingly stupid I could have been doing ;)

I just installed a second version of tf2 and it appears to be working fine. I have no idea what caused the issue still, so unfortunately if anyone has the issue and digs up this thread, all I can recommend is reinstalling a completely fresh version without using steam cloud at all. Best of luck and thanks to all that tried to help. xo

You are using the correct viewport rendering mode, right? Overlays are known to behave poorly when in the shaded mode.
