note: I've worked with downloading custom content, but the issue today being: (1) it's been too long and I cannot remember when to put them, and (2) where I think they should go is causing errors up the wazzoo

the first problem being: its causing a crap ton of errors, either not loading properly, or just crashing hammer

while trying to install an old game, I saw how I had set up the files under TF/custom

actually, it works fine now, I had the custom folder with basic material data stored under the folder I named textures(skybox) or textures(overlays)

edit: the materials folder was named textures, the two subfolders were skybox and overlays

you don't want them in tf/custom, put your materials under tf/materials (/models if its a model) and your models in tf/models
I have all custom things in custom -folder and everything works fine

I recommend to organize your stuff like this:

tf/custom is the root folder for client mods, because it can read VPK files
tf/download is the root folder for all the bloating mods from custom servers.
tf/ is the root folder for your mapping stuff. Now you have all three things seperated and since you access the mapping stuff the most, it is in the shortes path.
