i'm trying to make a Colosseum and part of that is making the seats but i'm having trouble making the seats and the circularness. to make the stairs i basically wanna stack a bunch of circles but i don't know how to resize a brush from the center and how do i work with weird angles?

Making a coliseum might be difficult if you're new to Hammer. It would probably be difficult if you weren't new to Hammer, also. Probably the same method that worked for koth_roundhouse would work best.

Ok - I'm about to break the cardinal rule of mapping here butt... use the carve tool.

Ok OK before you all jump down my throat - lol

Here's what I'm thinking

- make a bunch of verticle cylinders different widths they all have to be centered with each other (by using the x

- have them intersect a bunch of different plates (these will be your seats) all stacked on on top of the other, align these to the cylinders using the x again to make sure that they are all centered.

- hide all except the lowest plate and 1 cylinder

- carve it - then hide it

- repeat this process for all your plates working outwards and upwards

- once done - clip it in half so you only have to do one side.

- look at your objects (the plates) see what the best way is to clean them up (since carving butchers everything) see what can be combined/modified and do it.

- make each section or a group or the entire thing a func_detail (unless you have 40 days to wait while vis compiles it for you)

- make sure all are selected, shift drag to make a copy then filp it bring the two halves togther to make a whole object and you're done.

The arch tool gives better cirles actualy, all sections perfectly line up to the center.

You just have to learn to calculate the sizes of each cilinder, but once you know that youll never want to go back to carve.

The best part with arches is that you can just remove 1 section of it and that would instantly become a nice hole where with carve you are far more likely to make corrupt brushes.

I made a tutorial about this, for people that like my soothing, stuttering voice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBbhEq8blH4

Should I make a separate thread about it in the Tutorials section?

this will probably become helpful in the future but i think stacking circles would be easier but finding 2 different points is a pain in the ass and i'm not sure how to set the dimensions with integers or scale from the center

btw i rotated it 22.5 degrees so it's easier to work with

this is what it's supposed to look like('m making a roman colosseum)

well now i have a bit of a problem... i apparently brought a long a bunch of stuff with the seat instances so the grid is cluttered and the arena is barely lined up with the seats and i don't exactly know where to put the arena to line it up

There seems to be a bug that stops images inside spoiler tags from working.

First, turn off radial culling. Tht shit is doing you no good. Only adding massive fps lag to hammer. (red circle at the top tool bar)

Next:
Why are you even trying to align the walls of the arena with the instances? The instances aare there so you don't need to align anything. The instances should contain the inner wall as well.
Change your ground to a displacement and you should be able to overlap it into the walls without any problems.
