Hammer not starting

I've downloaded SDK, SDK Source Base 2006, SDK Source Base 2007.

I've ran HL2 once.

Upon trying to start Hammer, I get a circle mouse icon for a few seconds, then nothing happens.

I've selected SDK Source Base 2009 as default and TF2 at the bottom, yet nothing changes. All the other options work, such as Model Viewer, etc.

An obvious solution would be that I haven't downloaded Source Base 2009, yet I can't find that on Steam anywhere.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

For starters, you don't need an SDK base for using Hammer. Those are required for running mods built on the respective engines (you can't make a 2009 mod yet, hence the lack of a base for it).

However, yesterday's TF2 update brought with it an SDK update... which broke the 2009 Hammer. Not your fault and nothing you can do about it, so just wait it out.

Alright, thanks for your help.

I'm not looking forward to the astronomical learning curve needed to make a successful map, but learning is never painless.

Thanks again:p

The learning curve of hammer scales precisely to your goals. Hammer is remarkably easy and if you challenge yourself to mini-goals you'll have a far more rewarding experience and be more successful in the long run. You can have a fully functioning room or two that is playable in-game in one evening. From there, expand upon your room trying new things: a rotating door, a displacement, etc.

My advice to newbies is to never start out trying to make a full map. Instead, try to model your house or school. You'll have more fun and pick up important skills along the way.

Good luck, and remember, TF2Maps is pretty much the best resource in the world. In the history of the internet there has never been a better central hub for mapping tutorials and helpful people. Even if a lot of us a douchy assholes.
