Two blog posts in two days? Your eyes don't deceive you. We're blog-writing machines this week, and there's plenty of gas in the tank.

Today's update includes both of the Art Pass Contest Winners' maps: Mountain Lab by Valentin "3Dnj" Levillain, and Mann's Manor by Tim "YM" Johnson and Alex Kreeger.

Also included in this update: You being scared! [sound of bat wings] That's right, it's the Second Annual Team Fortress Halloween Special. Will there be ghosts? Quite possibly. Will there be exploding pumpkins? You never know. Will you wet your pants in terror? If you're anything like us, emphatically yes.

And what more perfect holiday than Halloween to add the scariest feature yet to the Mann Co. Store: Gift wrapping! If someone decides to trick or treat on your server, wrap up that spare bottle of Jarate and give them the gift a thousand words could never describe, and a thousand therapist appointments will never undo.

Also added to the store: new community items themed for Halloween and a few scary hats of our own dark design. Some of these new holiday items are only available to purchase during the holiday, but will remain wearable all year round, so grab 'em while they're grabbable.

I was hoping we could do a gameday where we played the artpass highlights and strut our medals together, but i guess this halloween thing is gonna have everyone busy for the coming week.

Good stuff though, should be fun.

So I played for an hour on Mann Manor and never once saw this Horseless Headless Horseman guy ... does it not work on a local server or something? Or does he appear at random, not regularly like the ghost on Harvest? I guess it could be the latter, since there's more associated with him (new weapon, and some other stuff, not just one achievement like last year's ghost).

You need at least 10 people, I think. You can enable cheats and spawn him though.

Quick facts about the Headless Horseless Horsemann from painful experience:
  • Spawns every 480 seconds, with IIRC a deliberate +/-60 random spread.
  • Requires >10 people (not bots) on server.
  • Appears on whatever control-point is not locked by one team or the other.
  • Is not targeted by sentries.
  • Chases one person who is "it" (designated with a skull-and-crossbones icon) and opportunistically stuns/kills people nearby.
  • The person who is "it" can hit an enemy to make the enemy "it", although this doesn't guarantee the HHH won't kill him as it rushes towards its new prey.
  • It will destroy sentries and dispensers to get at its target, and cloaking cannot hide you from it.
  • When the person who is "it" dies, gets too far away, or enters a spawn room, the HHH retargets to the nearest player who then becomes it.
  • If it can't find anyone to chase, it goes back to the CP it spawned on.
  • Health amount increases with more people on the server.
  • You can get two possible achievements.
  • One achievement is simply doing lots of damage to the HHH.
  • The other ("Gored") is only possible by striking the final killing blow with a melee weapon on the HHH. (Before it begins its dying animation, so don't bother hanging back waiting for that moment.)
  • When you get the "Gored" achievement, you get a one-time craftable haunted metal.
