Minecraft - Valve?

I’ve had a great time here in Bellevue so far! The MinecraftCon 2010 thing was great, especially once the torrent of questions started slowing down, and I got a lot of nice gifts I’m trying to safely bring back to Sweden now.

I met with Valve on Wednesday and got to see their awesome (but slightly too symmetrical; I got lost!) offices. We spoke a bit about who I am and who they are and briefly about my plans for Minecraft.

Yesterday, I met with two people from Bungie and ended up having a few beers with Ondraus. He seems to be a true gamer, and we spoke about older games and the games industry and how it’s moving ahead, and about my plans for Minecraft.

I can’t tell you everything that happened and what I saw, since I don’t want to give away any secrets, so pardon me if I seem a bit secretive. But I will inform you about anything that would affect Minecraft as soon as I know anything myself. So far, nothing concrete has come up, though.
Mixing an open and honest development style with big American corporations and their NDAs is strangely exhilarating. I feel like an international businessman of mystery!

In half an hour or so, I’m going back to Valve for some final discussion, then I’m flying back to Sweden. Time to finish up packing, I guess..

I know a lot of you saw it coming....

I don't really want to Valve buy Minecraft. Sure Notch can distribute Minecraft in Steam and such but I want that Notch himself OWNS Minecraft.

If Valve buys Minecraft it would mean HAAATSSSSsssssHHHHHH BOOOM!

Preorder Minecraft today and receive a FREE tf2 mining helm-What do you mean it already exsists? WELL MAKE A BETTER ONE THEN!

I still have no real interest in Minecraft.

I hope I'm not the only one who doesn't want Valve to own everything.

They should focus on their own games.

Personally, I reckon Gabe Newell should be made King Of The Videogame Industry - starting by giving him full ownership of Activision-blizzard, and then making Robert Kotick the personal slave of Vince Zampella and Jason West.

Imagine it - MW3 taking 3 years to come out, and then being able to wear a pink bowtie while using the wonderfully innovative portal-ak47 to teleport spetsnaz off a cliff!

<3

EDIT: Maybe I'd just go around using a tactical crowbar instead.

Well MC has probably hit its peak of success. I'm not sure what Valve would get out of it besides the fact they are fans, whilst Notch may or may not acquire more sales than otherwise. After all Valve have done plenty for Notch already.

I got to meet Notch while he was in Bellevue, and I got my mousepad signed. He's a pretty cool guy.

As nice as minecraft is, it's too simple to run very long. I'm afraid investing in it right now isn't such a smart move.

That's what i was thinking too....

In terms of developing it further the only thing i can think of is developing little accessory pieces. How much further can it really be taken? Its very novelty is its simplicity.

I don't know, you're talking about Valve here. The same company that's managed to keep TF2 alive and well for years.

Their involvement in the community that keep the game alive for years did.

I hope this isn't the Survival Mode you're talking about, because there are countless ideas for additions and improvements being discussed on the Minecraft forums constantly.

Notch is not going to sell minecraft to valve or anyone any time soon, because he just set up a game company :p

Valve are probably just arranging to get the game onto Steam to help increase Notch's sales since they love the game so much.

Or they might have given him some good advice on communicating with his community to help keep Minecraft going at it's best. Just like Valve usually manage.

Well i read somewhere that Notch has some other ideas lined up (which is why he set up shop and hired a few guys) maybe he's planning to use valve to release more games?
