I'm trying to make an area that is somewhat like a canyon/valley, essentially a large hole in the ground but with steeply sloped sides. There are four exits, two on either side. I have absolutely no idea how to make it look decent, though. I've tried quite a few displacement cliff tutorials and such (including YM's tutorials), but none of them seem to work out.

Here's a screenshot of my (currently square) valley area. Each part of the walls is split so that they will sew correctly, but I'm not sure how to go from there.

I want the sides of the cliff to look somewhat like this except without the graduated sides, just sloping directly down like a valley but with an expansive flat bottom, and it should have a generally rounded shape. The top area needs to be accessible as well, with only a very slight slope there.

How might I go about doing this?

I looked at that exact tutorial actually. The problem is that when I use that method none of the corners line up correctly because it's a box rather than an angled wall, and the corners sink in when I sew them.

one thing i like to do when sewing perpendicular displacements is to use the face-normal option.
create a brush somewhere and rotate it or clip it so you have a 45 degree angle. then go into brush edit mode, select you displacements and open the edit geometry window. select your direction as face normal. now hold ALT and right click onthat 45 degree angle face you created earlier.
what i do next is just use the smooth tool along the line that the two displacements meet, until i have a fairly smooth shape. from there it's much easier to sculpt it into the shape i want.

i suppose alternatively you could have 8 faces in your canyon instead of 4, but you'll still want to smooth the edges where they meet one way or another.

hope that helps
