I learned a lot about scale and optimization during this contest. I'm also trying to draw my layouts before I start mapping now. Instead of just blocking stuff out.

Contests should take place AFTER everyone has had their exams... Starting them in late June/early July would let northern hemisphere people celebrate the completion of important exams with a few moths of grinding away at a map, desperately trying to get it to work.
Also, can we not do CTF or competitive next please?

I learned that i should take some time to think about the layout, not starting to make something without any concept.

(my map was basically three big rooms)

I learned that Source is still a pile of rubbish but I still feel compelled to it.

-256 is an okay reference width for rooms, but not as the width of hallways.
-How to turn crap into gold.
-I suck at detailing.
-Areaportals hate me, but I don't hate them.
-Whenever I compile a map, there is always that little mistake that I know I can't release the map with, even if it's a bad shadow on a prop hidden away in a corner.
-Taking a month off of mapping is both good and bad.

That too, lol. We only play turbine in etf2l for the same reason as we play well, because they were there at the start (or soon after), but next season they're going to be phased out (or turbine will be reworked in terms of rules).

I think an important lesson to learn from this contest is that if you're doing something that might be mentioned on the official dev blog, especially one that involves files on the order of hundreds of megabytes in size, it helps to have mirrors ready!

Considering Bittorrent as a distribution method might not be a bad idea. It allows users to help relieve the strain on the server. In fact, some people actually prefer Bittorrent to HTTP mirrors, and lots of users have unused upstream that they can contribute as well.

I would seed a full map pack if someone seeded it first. However, considering that my upstream is 10 kb/s, then I wouldnt be much help :p
