Ok, so for the sakes of being thorough i used the windows defrag to clean my internet caches before using a better defragging tool: auslogics. But when it came to defragging with that it only increased my fragmentation efficiency by an extra 0.01%.

That still leaves me with a 20.34% fragmentated drive, which is apparently low, but it doesn't sound low to me. Not to mention how because the gcf's wern't able to be processed (presumably because of their size) steam will still bitch about the fragmentation. Which was one of the reasons why i decided to get around to defragging in the first place.

The trouble is it doesn't like the huge gcf's and keeps complaining about no free space to move them around. (42gb free of 150gb drive).

The only thing i can see would resolve this would to either uninstall steam, run another defrag, then reinstall steam and all the gcf's fresh and installed contiguously. Or move them over to my secondary where presumably it will all be stored contiguously.

Now is there an easy way of doing that? Like, just moving the steam directory across and deleting the registry blob file or something? It would save me a lot of hassle.

I think that GCFScape can defrag gcf's.

I think that GCFScape can defrag gcf's.

this
and if steam is bitching about games being defragmented just use its defrag tool to deal with that specific game

if you insist on moving steam basically what you want to do is take the steamapps folder and nothing else, though copying them between harddrives is going to cause some fragmentation anyways
Also...when moving steam around most games will work right off the bat, just restart steam, but tf2 in particular gets really picky and will need a verification at least, possibly a reinstall

I reformat my laptop alot, so...yeah...

I used the steam defrag a while ago, the first time it worked alright, the second time it crashed then i re-did it 2 weeks later when i had time. The fact it is asking again 2 months later leads me to believe it did little in the way of actually improving my fragmentation when the next update causes it to bitch some more.

I'll check out the options in gcfscape in the morning.
