Create your own L4D scene using the L4D Authoring Tools.

Rules*:
  • Scene must be placed on 1024x2048 bounds.
  • No 3dskybox, nothing outside the 1024x2048 limit. Height doesn't matter. Go nuts.
  • Custom models/props/textures/overlays are allowed
  • You can use a skybox texture.
  • One screenshot required, maximum of 3 for each entry.
  • You have to upload the .vmf to prove you didn't exceed the limit.
  • Submit your screenshot/s and .vmf before Sunday, December 13th 2009 in the upload thread!
  • 2 entries allowed for each mapper.

Winner will be decided by community vote. Votes should be based on screenshots submitted only. The entry receiving the most votes will receive a copy of L4D2 (graciously provided by Valve) before the Christmas holiday!

*Entries not adhering to rules will be disqualified. Not sure about something? ASK!

Looks cool, shame I don't have any practice at making l4d maps. D:<

Win l4d2? great!
Now I just need to get l4d(1) to access the tools ;)

Honestly though. Looks like a good competition and with such a nice prize I'm sure a lot of cool entries will be submitted. Good luck.

It's a lot easier to map with the generic wishy washy HL-realistic style materials and textures. Mapping for TF2 can be so fidly, and it's theme so very specific it leaves little room for ingenuity.

If i really wanted the game i might have entered this.

I already have the game but might still enter anyway.

So all it is is just to make a scene? Doesn't have to work ingame or anything?

Yeah, and by the looks of it you only need to have good screenshots, so people won't even need to load it up, they only want the VMF to make sure it's 1024x2048.

BUT. If you guys are gonna be making awesome scenes, you should go ahead and make them into background maps. I know that background maps are pretty popular for most games, and have been in use since HL2.

I know not of these people who like background maps. They make the game menu take ages to load for little benefit

I'll consider entering this, I just wish I weren't so damn lazy/busy. I guess I should, but then I should also finish my tf2 maps, and get started on my l4d map, and get a job...

Can you enter even though you already have L4D2?

Yes. We promise not to check your Steam account.

Also not letting people use 3d skyboxes is completely retarded for L4D.

Thanks for the completely helpful suggestion. See your question above for a better example of completely retarded.

Kidding aside, if you have an opinion on what we can do better for future contests, try to be a more descriptive.

To make the contest more popular, give every entrant a limited time l4d copy for mapping puposes only.

Don't worry jokes (unless your willing to). :)

If they are optimized well, it won't take forever to load. You just gotta do it right.

Sorry I didn't make it more clear. You should allow 3D skyboxes as L4D is pretty bland and boring without them.

Yeah, I'd like to have it added in the next mini-mapping contest. For this one, I just wanted something that was easy and accessible for the newer folks.

Why not just make it an option and not a requirement?

I've already entered one map, and it would mean me having to add the 3d-sky to make it look better, or leave it. If I left it out, the chances are my scene would look bad compared to others.

If it was a new rule, then me and the other people that have already finished one entry would have to be allowed to re-submit.

Not going to change any rules for this contest. We'll learn what works/doesn't and make the next one better.
