Ye Olde Workshoppe - The mighty quest for an epic update

Ye Olde Workshoppe is a community initiative about creating medieval themed content for a community update. You can find out more about it at http://medieval.tf2maps.net/.

We are looking for more medieval themed maps on the workshop.

Please note that it's not just about medieval mode, it's primarily about the medieval theme. You don't have to use medieval mode! However, if you're combining any other game mode with medieval keep in mind how the absence of long-range weapons affects the balance. For example, a Scout carrying the flag without a speed penalty is quite impossible to stop.

You can download a medieval prefab pack here to get started:

Is this really the best time for this? Mayann project was announced literally just last month. Too many of these is just going to dilute the content pool for any project that does ultimately get picked up.

No due date, valve has more options, no set lock in time for mayan either.
could be 2017 before this content pack gets looked at by valve, or vice versa with mayann.

The more content packs the better in my oppinion, so that way we have all the packs we want to present valve, and they have more then "hey whens that 1 pack ready?" option.

There's plenty of people who have been like "This theme sucks" or whatever for Mayann and Iron Gauntlet. I don't think it's really a problem.

You post this on facepunch, get a few disagree votes, then come and post it here as well, then back to facepunch to say it's not even necessary.

Dude, let me make this exceptionally clear: Stop being a dick

1) Timing will have been discussed by the people running it.
2) They're DEFINITELY reading both of these threads, posting in one is enough
3) You may or may not have a valid point, but your wording is aggressive and hostile

My apologies if I came across rather strong. I guess I just got very invested in the idea of the Mayann project, and I saw the introduction of a Medieval project as a more generic theme which would dilute the stream of quality Mayann-themed items while reducing the odds of both projects being picked up as official updates.

It's not that I have anything against Medieval mode or Medieval cosmetics, you understand; I just feel as if the Medieval theme is far easier to develop maps, cosmetics, and weapons around, and that there's little chance of the Mayann project being as popular (and thus less likely to be picked up as an official update) as a Medieval-themed update, due to the enduring popularity of Medieval mode and the high probability of a more consistent flow of Medieval submissions to the Steam Workshop. I would have been all behind this project had it been announced in eight months time, but a month after the announcement of the Mayann project?

Look, you're all talented individuals, and I have no doubt that you'll make some creative and interesting submissions. But dang it, I'm not a robot, and it really pains me to see the arrival of a fancy new project that looks to be the death knell of a project I was so heavily invested in, and for which I had so many ideas to flesh out once I finally got the chance in a few weeks. It just feels to me like you're more or less giving up on continuing development for the Mayann project after it had barely even started. And what am I supposed to do? Keep developing ideas for a project that isn't as likely to get accepted for an update? Or shift creative gears and get involved in a much more open-ended project which could - for all I know - have its legs swept out from under it a month later at the whims of the creative gods within the TF2 community?

I'm sorry if I came off as a dick. I'm sorry that I made two posts in an effort to make my voice heard regardless of the steep, slippery slope of Facepunch's rating system. But after a life of not getting taken seriously by friends and colleagues, I wasn't willing to let my voice be casually ignored in the roar of the hype train.

This sort of makes me want to finish Bloodmount.

Too bad I am such a procrastinator.

I get your point but there is really no need to feel like this. No members of the Mayann project are abandoning their ship (as far as I know) and they are still going strong working on the content and the video. Once they have released the prop pack it will be easier to develop jungle themed maps since that is what is mostly hindering map development compared to the medieval theme at the moment.

Valve has not made any statement yet, so for all I know they could pick all themes or none and there is at least one more theme being worked on at the moment from what I heard. There will always be some competition between themes and submissions on the workshop but there is more than one track for hype trains and ultimately the community has to decide what it likes. I also like the Iron Gauntlet and Mayann themes and would have been developing content for it if I wasn't involved in this project for such a long time now.

I can only do so much as to encourage you to keep pursuing with your ideas. If you build something great people will like it. But you should stop thinking about what is more likely to get accepted. The past has shown that there is no way to predict what's going to happen next.

There's a lot of mental gymnastics to unpack here. A lot

Death knell of Mayann? are you serious? Do you have any idea how much work has gone into Mayann? How awesome the 7 minute short is? Another community project running along side Mayann won't kill Mayann. There are like 3-4 other projects going on, and we've known for ages. It doesn't worry at all!

You can still be heavily invested in Mayann. You can get invested in this too. It's not an exclusive thing. And if you don't want to jump onto one, there's going to be another person who only wants to do the opposite to you

"you're" who're? Gadget and the Medieval crew are not JPRAS and the Mayann crew. You're looking at two different projects run by two different groups of people.

Finally, if Valve want this new method of doing updates to work, then lots of initiatives is what we need. Lots of people making lots of stuff, there's a saying, Don't count your chickens all in one basket or something. Lots of projects will lead to a healthy future for TF2

Wait, was the Arctic pack meant to be a community update or just a content pack for mappers?? From what I saw, the Arctic pack was the latter and was never really a serious thing, if it was you all did a superb job at not making it appear like a serious thing.

Not if it's 80% cosmetics, 15% maps (including props) and 5% other stuff (weapons, unusual effects, taunts, etc).
I don't understand what point you're trying to make. That sounds like an ideal update to me??

I've been following it before I even joined the site, it was supposed to be a asset pack like construction and japan.

Sure, let's add even more cosmetics to the already 1240 in-game which is already like 1000 too many.

How to make a bloated mess of a game, step 1.

I'm very glad that people are doing these projects and that they choose to share them here. Your opinions on the general state of TF2 have been repeated over and again: if you want to beat your head against that particular brick wall then please do so in another thread.
