Map Section on TF2 Workshop?

So why hasn't Valve added a spot for maps on the TF2 Workshop, with the ability to subscribe like with the Skyrim workshop? Wouldn't that be awesome? I know it's pretty easy to to download maps already, but if they make it easier and popular with the workshop more severs will have quality custom maps. Its probably a technical hurdle they'll have to get over, but I think it would be worth it.

I feel like they expect this site to be the workshop since they've collaborated with the site before. Not to mention the several blog posts.

I hope not. This site is great, but the popularity of the steam workshop would really help heighten the TF2 communities interest in Custom Maps. Oh, and also automatic updates with the steam workshop.

I kind of don't want this. Let me explain;

Here, we have some semblance of quality control. A steam workshop, we would not, nor would anyone else. It would become game banana, and all the standards we strive to achieve would be lost in the jump, surf, orange and remake maps which would be "popular" because of all the downloads and up votes. The general public doesn't understand the kind of quality we strive for, and therefore the maps that follow that will be lost.

And let's be honest, you get no decent feedback from the comments there.

Also, how often do people download custom maps? They usually get them from the server. Sharing multilayer maps wouldn't be very helpful to the developers, unless there was some way for a player to go to the workshop page of the map they're currently playing on, and it would not be useful to the players because they'll continue to get custom maps in the same way they do now.

You'll be surprised how much they don't care about this site. Case and point, how long did it take them to fulfill implementing the medal? Coupled with the fact that they specifically and intentionally ignored us for months after not only the artpass contest, but any and every blog mention, because they didn't want to appear to prefer our community over any other.

OK, maybe not caring is going a bit far, they obviously appreciate the fact that we support the game so much. But they would probably not miss us if we died.

If Valve appreciate a service enough they tend to assimilate it, like the wiki.

As far as I know its mostly because of the filesizes and it'd be too hard to enforce quality like with models, where you could just view a screenshot.

It wouldn't/couldn't be for feedback anyway, and only an insane person would take feedback that way.

EDIT: Though the filesize thing might be out the window with the Skyrim Workshop.

EDIT #2: Actually all that shits out the window with the Skryim Workshop. I have no idea, please continue on.

Some days ago I wrote an email to the TF-Team suggesting a map section on the workshop. Like Fr0Z3n I haven't got an answer yet.

I don't think that the Workshop can replace this site nor that it should. The Workshop has another function. It is a place to present finished work that you would like to see in the official game. Being that it can provide additional exposure for custom maps and I would like to see that.

There is currently a map on the workshop that illustrates some concerns other people in this thread brought up. Skyrim's Riverwood Map for TF2
I see several reasons why this map does not belong into the Workshop:
Obviously it violates copyright which is one of the official criterions of rejection the Workshop offers.
It is a work in progress (beta 6). While I don't think a Workshop entry should be immutable, I think It would be sensible to only allow release candidates.
As far as I know it doesn't have a gametype (the file is named trade_riverwood_b6).
And I do not like the look nor the design of that map.

The problem is, while a workshop for RC's would be great, there is not a chance in heck that is what it will stay as.

I'd rather just keep the crap maps to gamebanana.

Valve deal with maps in a very different way than how they deal with models. It's very easy for Valve to see a model, decide if they like it and then incorporate it. Maps are a different story. They wont touch a map unless it is popular within the overall TF2 community. A workshop would be redundant and a lot of effort on their part tech wise, engineers, servers, software, etc.

For this reason i doubt Valve feel they even need a work shop as they can just use some server stats, have one of their employees do a little research for a few hours to find the map and play it on some populated servers and then find the author if they're interested.
