Model My first attempt at a hat

Okay, introduction.

First of all, I'm aware I am not a great modeller. I haven't touched Maya in over two years, and even though I took classes in it, my lecturors (who were useless) never taught me how to model. So I really am self-taught.
Hence, I will accept any and all constructive criticism, but please no "this is poor modeling" comments - I know, I know.

As it stands, this is the Rose Pie as I want it. It is supposed to be in the fashion of ladies' racing hats, and the colours will be a soft pink and soft blue respectively. I thought I'd have some fun by playing on everyone's fears of the Pyro being a girl, or even very feminine, what with the handbag and everything.

I intend to redo the bow; it looks garbage as it is now, and I actually wanted it to be much bigger. At first I wasn't sure how to do this, but I realised that in its current state my hat is only 402 triangles, or half the polycount Valve have stipulated, which means I can effectively go to town on a bouncy, cushy bow, which is my next objective.

Obviously I haven't started on texturing it just yet, I'd rather save that for when I have my model down pat.

If we're not allowed to say it's bad, are we not allowed to say it's amazing?

:p

LOL You are allowed to say it's bad as long as you say why. I'm just being paranoid 'cause I've seen people bash models that are much better than mine in other threads without really explaining how it could be improved.

(But thanks >u>)

I have a sinking feeling the texturing is going to be what will hold me up the most. I have vague memories of it being the toughest part of finishing a model like this.

It all looks like it's using one smoothing group.

You should have it set up like so, bottom : 1 top : 2 the extruded part of the hat : 1

Left is unsmoothed, middle is alternating smoothing groups, and right is fully smoothed.

The model itself isn't that bad, I mean it's a hat, which is a pretty simple object, and hard to go wrong with anyway :p

Did you unwrap the model before you modified the geometry of the mesh? ...because unwrapping afterwards is no fun at all. The shape of the hat looks pretty good though.

I haven't touched the texture mesh at all yet. |D

Like I said, I haven't touched this thing in over two years. So if it's agony for me to texture it, I promise at this point not to complain.

To Selentic, I will take your advice and smooth the bits a little once I get the bow done.
